The center, which also will include two other theaters for musicals, ballet and other productions, will be east of the Meyerson Symphony Center. She said the Winspears' gift will "forever change the cultural landscape of Dallas."Ĭouncilwoman Velletta Forsythe Lill said the performing arts center will infuse $170 million annually to the city's economy and create hundreds of jobs. The city may seek another $25 million in a 2005 bond issue. The Dallas-based company, which makes vinyl siding, fencing, windows, fencing, railing and garage doors, was sold to Harvest/AMI Holdings and will eventually be moved to Akron, Ohio.īut public dollars also are necessary to build and support a thriving arts district, Winspear said.ĭallas Mayor Laura Miller said the City Council hopes to include $20 million in initial funding for the performing arts center in a bond package that goes before voters in September. He said he and his wife have wanted to share their love of opera, and found the financial means to donate after the recent sale of their manufacturing company, Associated Materials. The announcement was made at a news conference Tuesday at the Morton H. The 2,400-seat opera and dance theater will be named the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House. The contribution by Margot and Bill Winspear, one of the city's largest philanthropic gifts ever, pushes the total for the complex in the downtown Arts District to almost half the estimated $250 million cost.
